Two johns courting the same "old whore"

A fortnight to the convention and the Democratic presidential ticket is fait accompli. John Kerry has chosen fellow senator John Edwards as his running mate. It is now official: Two johns after the same “old whore.”

Whether the country remains in the hands of the Malevolent Duo, George and Dick, or the Two-John Dream Team takes the reins, the “old whore” will have nothing to fear. She will continue performing the same tricks no matter who gets in. America ’s foreign policy, the political mother of terrorism and venerable “old whore,” will remain on-course following the path which was paved long ago. In a nutshell: It will remain pro-Israel, pro-empire and anti-UN. Any politician aspiring to be a contender for the highest office in the land must accept, unconditionally, the behavioral rules of the “old whore." Ask those who tend to be mavericks and not conform to the rules. Last victim: Howard Dean.

At the risk of choosing a running mate that may outshine him during the campaign, Kerry had little choice but to invite the Carolinian to share his fate. Edwards’ charm, convincing ways and humble roots are all noteworthy attributes, as is the fact that he is not another Yale man. Is this “too- liberal ” a ticket for Mainstream America?

There are many of us who for years have held the premise that America lacks a political Left, or even a true Center, just different grades or levels of the Right. To defend that postulation, reinforcement just came my way over the 4th of July weekend from a young man named Jake.

Jake, a neighbor’s son, has recently returned from a teaching assignment in one of those nations which appears in Rumsfeld’s New Atlas as part of “The New Europe.” Besides showing high expertise in hamburger flipping at his parents’ BBQ, he turned out to be just a dissertation shy of a Ph.D. in Political Science. The hypothesis he is trying to prove: That in America ’s political spectrum, over 90% of the participant voters diverge fewer than 45 degrees in their views (out of a possible 180).

If Jake’s contention is correct, the implication begs the question of how far to the right, or left, anyone can be. Or, to put it in real political terms, how much of a “leftie” can anyone be, if one is only 30 or 40 degrees to the left of Bush? If Jake’s hypothesis proves valid, which intuitively I expect it will, “Mainstream Voting America” does appear far enough to the Right. Voting bears repeating since barely half of Americans eligible to vote, do vote.

To call Kerry, Edwards, and most other Democratic political leaders, liberal , stretches absurdity to the outer limits. At best, we could do some justice by considering these so-called liberal democrats to be no more than “compassionate conservatives,” a political species which does not seem to survive, much less thrive, in the intemperate climate of the Republican Party, although originally grafted for it.

The closest thing to the political Left in this USA, and with a very limited following, are individuals such as Nader and Kucinich, who are truly moderate liberal s, espousing progressive causes, and seemingly without owing allegiance to nocent special interests groups. But progressive and just causes in today’s America play second fiddle to our cause célèbre: Self-indulgence. So, at least for now, it does not appear to be any room even for the Moderate Left.

Bottom line: We, in America, not only have a difficult time adopting the metric system, but also in defining political left and right… versus other people in the world.

But getting back to our johns and the “old whore”… wouldn’t it be comedic for Bush-Cheney to lose the election because of Iraq ? After all, both Johns in the Democratic ticket were, and likely are, pro-war and gave Bush the power to start the entire messy affair. Yes, strange bedfellows these politicians, whether Republicans or Democrats… they all seem to nurse from the same udder, although sucking from different tits.
